About This Course
The Qualifi Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business Management is designed to develop and reward current and future business managers while supporting both academic and professional progression. It combines Level 4 and Level 5 business management study and develops analytical, evaluative, problem-solving and transferable skills for use across a range of organisational settings.
The qualification comprises 12 mandatory units, six at Level 4 and six at Level 5. Learners study communication, leadership, finance, change, operations and team development before progressing to higher-level topics including the changing business environment, decision-making, business development, growth, customer management and risk management.
The qualification has QAN 610/1675/5 and carries 240 credits, 960 Guided Learning Hours and 2,400 hours of Total Qualification Time. Qualifi states that the Extended Diploma is equivalent to a Foundation Degree and can support progression to the final year of a related Honours degree at one of its university partners.
Am I eligible for this programme?
Applicants must be aged 18 or above. The specification states that learners entering Level 4 are envisaged to hold a Level 3 qualification, while progression into the Level 5 stage is based on Level 4 study.
Applicants whose first language is not English are required to have IELTS 6 or equivalent. Applicants are normally required to provide two supporting references, at least one of which should preferably be academic. Approved centres are responsible for assessing whether an applicant is capable of completing the programme successfully and meeting the demands of the qualification.

Level 4 Core Units
1. Communications in Organisations

This unit examines communication at organisational, interpersonal and internal and external levels. Learners explore communication practices, systems, styles and tools and consider how effective communication supports understanding, commitment, teamwork and organisational change.
2. Leadership and the Organisation
20 Credits
This unit develops practical leadership knowledge and skills for changing working environments. Learners examine leadership qualities, styles, theories and models and consider how different approaches can be applied to specific organisational situations.
3. Financial Awareness
20 Credits
This unit introduces the nature, role and importance of financial information from a managerial perspective. Learners explore accounting principles, financial reporting, interpretation and the use of financial information to support organisational decision-making.
4. Managing Change
20 Credits
This unit develops learners' understanding of organisational change and how it can be planned and managed. Learners examine change processes, analyse organisational issues and consider approaches for implementing, monitoring and evaluating change.
5. Business Operations
20 Credits
This unit focuses on the effective planning and management of business activities and resources. Learners explore operational processes, organisational goals, performance measures and approaches to improving efficiency and effectiveness.
6. Developing Teams
20 Credits
This unit focuses on building and developing effective teams within organisations. Learners examine team roles, leadership, performance, conflict and approaches to supporting individuals and teams in achieving organisational objectives.
Level 5 Core Units
7. Responding to the Changing Business Environment
20 Credits
This unit examines the external factors that influence organisations, including socio-economic conditions, markets and relationships between business and government. Learners analyse changing business conditions and develop appropriate organisational responses.
8. Effective Decision Making
20 Credits
This unit develops learners' ability to manage effective business decision-making processes. Learners examine information, stakeholder involvement and decision-making approaches and evaluate ways to improve the quality of organisational decisions.
9. Business Development
20 Credits
This unit develops knowledge and skills for researching markets and planning business development. Learners explore opportunities, market research, resource requirements and business models and learn how to prepare and present a business development strategy.
10. Business Models and Growing Organisations
20 Credits
This unit examines how organisations grow and the business models and strategies that can support sustainable growth. Learners explore growth options, innovation, performance, resources and environmental scanning in identifying and evaluating opportunities.
11. Customer Management
20 Credits
This unit focuses on customer-centred organisations and the importance of understanding customer needs and behaviour. Learners explore segmentation, customer relationship management, retention and approaches to adding value and strengthening customer relationships.
12. Risk Management and Organisations
20 Credits
This unit develops learners' understanding of organisational risk and the balance between opportunity, innovation and control. Learners examine risk profiles, organisational tolerance to risk and strategies for managing risk while supporting creativity and change.
Written Assignments
All units are internally assessed through written assignments, internally marked by the Qualifi approved centre and subject to external quality assurance by Qualifi.
Qualifi provides written assessment tasks for each unit. These tasks address the relevant learning outcomes and assessment criteria, all of which must be demonstrated to achieve the qualification. Assessment activities may draw on work-related information, real organisational examples or case studies, and some tasks may include a practical component requiring observation by an assessor.
As the Extended Diploma contains 12 mandatory units, learners complete written assessment across all 12 units. Qualifi provides a Candidate Workbook for each unit in which learners record their answers and cross-reference supporting evidence where relevant.
The grading structure is:
- Fail: 0 to 39%
- Pass: 40 to 59%
- Merit: 60 to 69%
- Distinction: 70% and above
University Progression
The Qualifi specification states that the Level 5 units are designed to lead into a top-up undergraduate year at a UK university. The Extended Diploma carries 240 credits and Qualifi describes it as equivalent to a Foundation Degree.
Qualifi states that completion of its Level 5 Diplomas enables progression to a Qualifi Level 6 Diploma in a related area, the final year of a Bachelor's degree, or employment in an associated profession. Qualifi also states that it has exemptions with a number of universities for progression to the final year of an Honours degree.
Admission to a particular university or final-year degree programme remains subject to the admissions, recognition and progression requirements of the receiving institution.
