Course Overview

The Qualifi Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement is designed for individuals who assess occupational competence in the workplace as well as vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments such as classrooms, workshops or training settings.

It is particularly relevant to aspiring or practising assessors who wish to demonstrate competence in vocational assessment.

The qualification is regulated on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and has Qualification Accreditation Number 603/5650/9. It consists of 3 mandatory units carrying a total of 15 credits.

Eligibility

The qualification is designed for learners aged 19 and above.

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements. However:

  • Learners may find it helpful to have previously achieved a Level 2 qualification
  • Entry to the qualification is through a centre interview
  • Learners are assessed on an individual basis to determine whether the qualification is appropriate for their age and ability
  • Applicants with considerable relevant experience but no formal qualifications may also be considered, subject to interview and being able to demonstrate that they can meet the demands of the programme

Module Listing

The qualification consists of three mandatory units. All three units must be successfully completed to achieve the qualification.

1. Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
3 Credits

This unit develops learners’ knowledge and understanding of the principles that underpin effective assessment. Learners explore different assessment methods, the responsibilities of an assessor, assessment planning, quality assurance, legal requirements, learner involvement and the importance of fair, valid and reliable assessment decisions.

2. Assessing Occupational Competence in the Work Environment
6 Credits

This practical unit develops learners’ ability to assess occupational competence within a genuine work or training environment. Learners plan assessments, use appropriate assessment methods, make assessment decisions, provide feedback, maintain records and review their own assessment practice.

3. Assessing Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
6 Credits

This unit focuses on assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in an approved vocational training environment outside the workplace. Learners develop practical competence in planning and conducting assessments, making assessment decisions, providing feedback and reviewing their own assessment practice.

The complete qualification carries 15 credits.

Written Assignments

Assessment for this qualification includes both knowledge-based assessment and practical assessment of assessor competence.

For Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment, the learning outcomes are assessed through:

  • Assignments
  • Oral questions
  • Written questions

These assessments are internally set and marked, internally verified and externally quality assured by Qualifi.

For Assessing Occupational Competence in the Work Environment, knowledge outcomes are assessed through assignments and oral or written questions. Practical competence must be demonstrated through actual assessment activity in a workplace or training environment. Simulation is not permitted for the occupational competence assessment.

The trainee assessor must be observed assessing two different learners and must provide evidence of carrying out at least two assessments for each learner, giving a minimum of four assessments in total.

Assessment evidence must include methods such as:

  • Observation of performance
  • Examination of products of work
  • Questioning learners

Other methods may include discussions, witness testimony, learner statements and recognition of prior learning.

For Assessing Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding, knowledge outcomes are also assessed through assignments and oral or written questions. Practical assessment competence must be demonstrated in an approved vocational training environment.

The trainee assessor must again be observed working with two different learners, including one learner who is new to learning and one who is more experienced. Assessment observations and supporting evidence are retained within the trainee assessor’s portfolio.

University Progression

Successful completion of the Qualifi Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement enables learners to progress to:

  • A Qualifi Level 4 qualification
  • Employment in an associated profession

The specification does not state direct progression to a university degree programme. Therefore, no guaranteed university progression or direct undergraduate entry should be claimed for this qualification.
