Course Overview
The Qualifi Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business, Management and Study Skills is designed for learners who wish to develop broad knowledge and practical skills in business and management while also strengthening the academic skills required for progression to higher education.
The qualification is particularly relevant to aspiring and existing junior managers, team leaders and learners seeking to develop their capabilities for employment within a management setting. It combines core business subjects with university study skills and provides opportunities to develop specialist knowledge through optional units.
The qualification is accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and has Qualification Accreditation Number 603/7380/5. It consists of 120 credits, with learners completing 12 units to achieve the qualification.
Eligibility
Applicants must be aged 16 or above.
Entry is through a centre interview, and learners are normally expected to meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Hold qualifications at Level 2
- Have work experience in a business environment and demonstrate ambition with clear career goals
- Hold a Level 3 qualification in another discipline and wish to develop a career in management
In certain circumstances, applicants with considerable relevant experience but no formal qualifications may be considered following an interview, provided they can demonstrate their ability to meet the demands of the programme.
Applicants whose first language is not English are required to have IELTS 6 or equivalent.
Applicants are normally required to provide two supporting references, with at least one preferably being academic.

Module Listing
The qualification comprises 10 mandatory units and 4 optional units. Learners must complete all 10 mandatory units and select 2 of the 4 optional units.
Each unit carries 10 credits, giving a total of 120 credits for the completed qualification.
Core Units
1. An Introduction to the Business Environment
10 Credits
This unit introduces learners to different types of businesses, their ownership structures and the roles of owners and stakeholders. Learners also explore how businesses are organised and how economic, political, legal and social factors can influence their activities.
2. Business Resources
10 Credits
This unit explores the resources required for successful business operations, including human, physical, technological and financial resources. Learners also develop an understanding of sources of finance and how key financial documents can be used to assess the financial position of a business.
3. An Introduction to Marketing
10 Credits
This unit introduces the principles and purpose of marketing within business. Learners explore market research, marketing planning, customer targeting and the marketing mix, while considering the legal, ethical and organisational factors that can influence marketing activities.
4. Human Resource Management
10 Credits
This unit introduces learners to the management of people within organisations. Learners explore employee motivation, performance management and the methods organisations use to manage, monitor and develop their workforce effectively.
5. Business Communication
10 Credits
This unit develops an understanding of how information is created, managed and communicated within organisations. Learners explore different forms of business information, communication methods and the legal, ethical and operational considerations associated with using and presenting business information.
6. Understanding Health and Safety in the Business Workplace
10 Credits
This unit introduces learners to health, safety and security within a business environment. Learners examine relevant responsibilities, workplace conditions and equipment, the roles of key personnel and the processes involved in identifying and assessing workplace risks.
7. Managing Business Operations
10 Credits
This unit develops learners’ understanding of how business operations contribute to organisational performance. Learners explore operational processes, quality management, benchmarking, performance indicators, quality assurance and approaches such as continuous improvement and Total Quality Management.
8. An Introduction to Finance
10 Credits
This unit provides an introduction to financial management and the financial information used by managers. Learners explore budgets, cash flow forecasts, financial statements and ratio analysis, developing the ability to understand and interpret financial information used in business decision-making.
9. English for University Studies
10 Credits
This unit develops the English language competencies required for undergraduate-level study, with particular emphasis on academic listening, reading and writing. Learners develop skills in academic research, planning and writing, referencing, avoiding plagiarism, note-taking and understanding academic presentations and discussions.
10. Communication and Cultural Skills for University
10 Credits
This unit prepares learners for communication within a higher education environment. Learners develop skills for participating in discussions, seminars, debates and presentations while also exploring academic culture, communication with university staff and strategies for adapting to university study.
Elective Units
Learners select two of the following four optional units.
11. An Introduction to Leadership Skills
10 Credits
This unit introduces learners to leadership roles, functions, theories and different leadership approaches. Learners examine the attributes and behaviours of effective leaders and explore how successful leaders communicate vision and manage organisational change.
12. Organisational Culture
10 Credits
This unit develops learners’ understanding of organisational culture and its importance within the workplace. Learners explore how culture develops within organisations and consider the ways organisational and cultural differences can influence people, management and working practices.
13. Workplace Welfare
10 Credits
This unit examines the importance of employee welfare and how organisations can ensure that members of their workforce are valued. Learners explore employee wellbeing, workplace benefits, safe systems of work, health and safety responsibilities and the organisational implications of workforce welfare.
14. Thinking Entrepreneurially
10 Credits
This unit develops entrepreneurial and critical-thinking skills and encourages learners to evaluate their own potential as entrepreneurs. Learners explore creativity, innovation, market research and business ideas while considering the knowledge and skills required to assess and develop an entrepreneurial opportunity.
Written Assignments
The qualification is internally assessed, with assessment carried out by the Qualifi approved centre and subject to external quality assurance by Qualifi.
Assignment tasks are designed to address the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit and, wherever possible, are presented as realistic work-related activities.
Learners may be required to:
- Apply relevant theories and concepts
- Research and refer to real organisations
- Analyse business situations
- Demonstrate problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
- Make appropriate recommendations
- Produce reports, plans and other forms of assessment evidence
- Draw upon workplace experience where appropriate
Learners complete 12 units in total. Therefore, assessment is undertaken across 12 required units, with written assignments forming the core assessment method.
Certain units also contain additional forms of assessment evidence appropriate to the skills being assessed. For example, English for University Studies includes listening assessment activities, while Communication and Cultural Skills for University includes activities such as group discussion and communication-based assessment.
University Progression
Successful completion of the Qualifi Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business, Management and Study Skills enables learners to progress to:
- A Qualifi Level 4 qualification
- An undergraduate degree
- Employment in an associated profession
The qualification therefore provides a pathway for learners who wish to continue into higher-level business and management study or progress into relevant employment. Admission to a particular university or undergraduate degree programme remains subject to the admissions requirements of the receiving institution.
